The University of Northwestern (MN) Men’s Basketball Team was a great group of young men to serve with. Each brought their different gifts and abilities to use for the sake of the Gospel.
There were many stories that come to mind. Yet, one in particular has struck me personally. The player (Matt) pictured below came up to me shortly after a game. I thought he was going to ask me where the bathroom was since he had been having stomach issues over the previous several days. However, Matt said, “Dave, do you know where Pastor Duane is? I need a translator quick. I want to share the Gospel with three kids I met!”. We quickly looked for Pastor Duane but could not see him. We found another pastor and Matt ran to find the three boys in the midst of a crowd. He found them and sat down in the middle of the court still drenched with sweat from just finishing a basketball game in the tropics. Matt and the pastor proceeded to share the Gospel with the three kids. The three turned into a crowd (as you can see pictured below) as others wanted to see and hear what was going on. By God’s grace, Matt and this pastor clearly shared the Gospel with these kids. It was a beautiful sight to see.
As I saw this unfold, the Lord reminded me of the examples we see in scripture and are exhorted to live out ourselves. We are to be urgent in sharing the Gospel because tomorrow is never guaranteed. Matt did not want these kids to leave the gym without hearing. He put his comfort aside to make sure they heard. This was a huge message and reminder for me. Are there those in my life I want to make sure hear the Gospel?
