I just returned last week from SE Asia. 14 flights in 18 days. Always better than taking a boat
Before leaving, some of you received a letter asking for your prayers. I just want to say thank you so much for your intercessions. I really saw God work. I believe your prayers were so vital.
Here are a few highlights:
Malaysia – I was able to meet with an individual who the Lord is using to reach hard Muslim areas in the region. It is exciting to hear what God is doing opening hearts of young men using the tool of basketball. I left excited at the potential Sports Ambassadors has helping this man in the ministry God has given him.
Singapore – I think the highlight for me was being able to spend time with former players I had the honor coaching years ago in their university days. They are in their 30s now with a number of them fathers. It was such a joy to see some of the guys growing in their faith. I was able see others coming closer to faith in Christ. Some of you have been praying for these guys for years. Please continue to pray for them.
Cambodia – God is clearly at work in this war-ravaged country. I feel so privileged to be able to simply participate in several things HE is doing.
First, there is a national goal of planting 11,000 churches by 2021 in this country where the vast majority have never heard the Gospel. These leaders were excited at the thought of using sports as a tool to help church planters connect with communities and make contact with people.
Second, a soccer tournament is planned for December in which we are invited to participate and minister at. I was amazed as tournament organizers gathered. I saw the Lord motivate these men to use this tournament to reach the lost. I saw the Lord provide just the right people with the right resources to make things happen. I saw the Lord move among these men to pray and seek to be equipped. I saw the Lord give them a vision to make this tournament an ongoing tool of evangelism an discipleship for the churches of Phnom Penh. We are looking for 6-10 guys who love Jesus, love people and like soccer to join us December 1-13 if you are keen or know anyone who may be…
Third, I met a man name Reaksa who is a survivor of the Killing Fields. As a teenager, he saw his entire family massacred in front of him. He escaped to Thailand and eventually came to Canada where he trusted Jesus and was educated earning a degree in psychology. The Lord led him back to Cambodia where he tracked down the killer of his family…and FORGAVE him. This had a profound impact on the community. He planted a church there. This church is open everyday with about 1,000 kids a week going through its doors. The church provides a place for kids to recreate as well as a library and some computers to help with education. It is a church that is transforming the community. He desires our team in December to spend time at his church to train PE teachers because this is a need of the community and thus an opportunity for the church to make Kingdom impact.
Philippines – I am so thankful to have been able to assist a Filipino brother for 5 days train and equip 15 pastors and youth leaders in using sports as a tool for evangelism and discipleship. The love and enthusiasm among this group was so genuine. As we did a sports outreach the final day, I was overjoyed as I saw them put into practice the training. They loved people in the context of sport games and shared the Gospel!
Overall, Thanks so much again for your prayers! I really sensed them. Please continue to pray as the work is ongoing!
